Dog-Friendly Restaurants and Patios on the Outer Banks

One of the best parts of vacationing with your dog on the Outer Banks is that so much of the area's outdoor dining culture is pup-friendly. Shaded patios, waterfront decks, and casual open-air spots are the norm here — and many places not only allow dogs but keep water bowls out front as a standing invitation.

Here's our guide to the best dog-friendly dining on the OBX, organized by area.

Corolla and Duck

Metropolis (Duck)

Duck Village has one of the most walkable, dog-friendly atmospheres on the OBX. Metropolis is a local favorite with a large patio that regularly fills with dogs and their owners. The menu covers burgers, seafood, and craft cocktails.

The Blue Point (Duck)

A more upscale waterfront option on Currituck Sound, The Blue Point has a covered outdoor deck with sound views. The kitchen runs on seasonal, local ingredients — fresh fish, local oysters, and produce. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace.

Roadside Bar & Grill (Duck)

A no-frills favorite known for its chowder and fried seafood. The outdoor picnic tables are dog-friendly and the portions are generous. Perfect after a morning on the beach.

Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills

Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar (Kill Devil Hills)

One of the OBX's most beloved seafood shacks, Awful Arthur's has a large wraparound deck where dogs are welcome on a leash. Order a dozen raw oysters and watch the foot traffic go by on the bypass.

TRiO Restaurant & Market (Kill Devil Hills)

TRiO has become a go-to for wine, cheese, and small plates. Their outdoor patio is relaxed and dog-friendly — great for a slower, late-afternoon meal.

Tortuga's Lie (Kitty Hawk)

A Kitty Hawk institution for over 30 years. The shaded patio out front is where you want to be with your dog — laid-back, casual, and well-staffed with people who genuinely love animals.

Nags Head

Tortugas' Lie (Nags Head Location)

Yes, there are two — and the Nags Head spot has the same patio culture. Dogs are welcomed enthusiastically.

Lucky 12 Tavern (Nags Head)

A reliable local pub with a good beer selection and a large outdoor space. Friendly to dogs and has water available for them on request.

Mulligan's Raw Bar & Grille (Nags Head)

Waterfront dining with a deck over Roanoke Sound. The views alone make it worth the stop, and dogs are permitted on the outdoor deck.

Manteo and Roanoke Island

1587 Restaurant at the Tranquil House Inn (Manteo)

Fine dining with a waterfront patio on Shallowbag Bay. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables and the kitchen uses local seafood and produce. A bit more formal, but worth it for a special dinner.

Big Al's Soda Fountain & Grill (Manteo)

A charming old-fashioned diner with sidewalk seating right on the Manteo waterfront. Classic burgers, shakes, and ice cream — dogs love sitting at the outdoor tables as much as kids do.

Tips for Dining Out with Your Dog on the OBX

Call ahead. Dog policies can change seasonally and the staff on a weekend lunch shift may not know the current policy. A quick call confirms it and avoids surprises.

Bring water. Even when restaurants offer bowls, having your own collapsible bowl means your dog is hydrated from the minute you sit down.

Choose off-peak hours. Lunch on a Tuesday is a much better dog-dining experience than Saturday dinner. Smaller crowds, more space, less stress for your dog.

Keep them in the shade. OBX summer heat is serious — always choose a shaded patio table. If the only available spots are in direct sun, it's worth waiting or moving on.

Tie securely. Most patios are close to busy roads. Use a secure leash attachment rather than looping a leash around a chair leg.

Your Dog-Friendly Home Base

Grandy Cove is one of the most genuinely pet-friendly vacation rentals on the OBX — with waterproof flooring, a washer/dryer for post-beach cleanup, dog crates, food and water bowls, and a private waterfront deck. Up to 2 dogs are welcome with no size restrictions. It's the kind of place where your dog isn't just tolerated — they're expected.
