Currituck Sound has been synonymous with exceptional waterfowl hunting for well over a century. Grandy Cove, our waterfront vacation rental on the Sound, puts you right at the heart of this legendary hunting ground — with a private boat launch, gear storage, and easy water access. The famous Currituck Club — once a private hunting preserve for wealthy Northern industrialists in the late 1800s — set the standard for what's possible here. Today, Grandy Cove puts you right at the heart of this legendary hunting ground.
Why Currituck Sound?
Currituck Sound is a shallow, freshwater sound that stretches about 30 miles north to south and provides ideal habitat for diving ducks, dabblers, and puddle ducks. The combination of aquatic vegetation, minimal salinity, and the Atlantic flyway position makes this one of the most productive duck hunting areas in the Eastern United States.
Common species:
- Canvasback — The king of Currituck. Once nearly depleted, canvasback populations have recovered and hunting has been restored.
- Redhead — Excellent numbers on Currituck Sound in most years.
- Bufflehead — Ubiquitous and fun to hunt, especially for newer hunters.
- Ruddy duck — Currituck Sound holds impressive numbers most winters.
- Teal (Blue-wing and Green-wing) — Early season teal hunting in September can be exceptional.
- Mallard and Black duck — Especially in the upper reaches of the sound where it freshens.
Season Dates
Duck season on Currituck Sound typically runs from late October through January, with exact dates set annually by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Check the current year's regulations before planning your trip.
Early teal season (September) is a popular time for many hunters because weather is warmer and populations are strong.
Guided Hunt Options
Several outfitters operate on Currituck Sound near Grandy Cove and offer guided hunts with blind access, trained Labrador retrievers, and expert guides. Typical packages include:
- Half-day hunts (morning flights) — 4:30am to 10am
- Full-day hunts — All day with break for lunch
- Boat hunting — Layout boat hunting for diving ducks in open water
- Blind hunting — Fixed blinds on the marsh edge
Booking 6–12 months in advance is strongly recommended for peak season dates (November and December). Many outfitters are fully booked by March for the following season.
DIY Hunting from Grandy Cove
Grandy Cove's boat launch makes self-guided hunting feasible if you have your own layout boat, skiff, or canoe and know the sound. Public access areas are available on Currituck Sound, though hunting pressure on public land is significant during peak season.
For local knowledge on public hunting areas, stop into any local sporting goods store in Grandy or Moyock — the staff are almost always hunters themselves and happy to share general information.
What to Bring
- Decoys — 36–48 diving duck decoys is a good start for Currituck
- Layout or skiff — Essential for open-water hunting
- Heavy waders — Currituck can be cold in December and January
- Retriever or plan for manual retrieval — Crippled birds in the sound reeds are difficult to recover without a good dog
- NC Hunting License + Federal Duck Stamp + HIP Registration — All required
Gear Storage at Grandy Cove
One of the advantages of staying at Grandy Cove for a hunting trip is the dedicated storage space for hunting gear. Waders, decoys, guns, and equipment can be stored securely rather than hauling it back and forth from a hotel. The laundry room is also ideal for cleaning up and drying gear between hunts. Check open dates and book direct — duck season fills up fast.
