H2OBX Waterpark is the most comprehensive water park on the Outer Banks — and one of the largest family attractions in North Carolina outside of the major theme park corridor. Located in Grandy, it's 5 minutes from Grandy Cove and consistently packed on summer days, particularly with families staying in the area who want a break from the beach.
Here's everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
Overview
H2OBX opened in 2017 and expanded significantly through its first few years of operation. The park covers approximately 22 acres and features a mix of thrill slides, family raft rides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and a dedicated children's area. It's well-designed for mixed-age family groups — toddlers and teenagers can both find their sweet spot.
Location: 3863 Caratoke Highway (US-158), Grandy, NC 27939
Distance from Grandy Cove: ~5 minutes
Season: Typically Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day
Hours: Usually 10am–6pm or 10am–7pm; check the park website for current schedule before your visit
Tickets and Pricing
H2OBX tickets are significantly cheaper when purchased in advance online versus at the gate. General advice:
- Buy online before you go; gate prices are typically $10–$15 higher
- Season passes are worth it for families staying a week or longer and likely to visit multiple times
- Height requirements apply to most major slides; check before assuming a child can ride everything
Check the H2OBX website for current pricing, which changes seasonally.
The Rides
Thrill Slides
The park's signature thrill offerings are its multi-story body slides and tube slides. Expect lines for the most popular slides during peak hours (11am–2pm). The park maps indicate height requirements clearly.
Tornado — The Centerpiece
The largest attraction in the park: riders in a multi-person tube are swept through a large funnel-shaped structure. The line for Tornado runs long on peak days; ride it first thing after opening or in the last hour before close.
Wave Pool
The wave pool runs on a cycle — usually 5 minutes of waves followed by a calm period. A popular gathering spot for all ages; body boards are available for rent or can be brought in.
Lazy River
The lazy river circles much of the park and is approximately 800 feet long. This is the primary venue for parents watching children, casual floating, and avoiding sun exposure while staying in the water. Inner tubes are included with admission.
Lil' Waves Children's Area
A dedicated shallow-water zone for young children with small slides, spray features, and shallow pool areas. The entire area is maintained at a maximum depth of 18 inches. A lifeguard is on station at all times.
Tips for Your Visit
Arrive at opening. H2OBX opens at 10am; arriving at 9:45am to be in the first wave through the gates is the most effective crowd strategy on a peak summer day. By noon, the most popular slides have 30–60 minute lines.
Weekdays are dramatically better than weekends. Tuesday through Thursday have the best crowd conditions. Avoid Saturdays from July 4th through Labor Day if at all possible.
Bring your own sunscreen and reapply. You're in the water constantly, but the OBX sun still reaches you. SPF 50+ minimum; reapply every 90 minutes.
Cash or card? The park accepts both. Food, drinks, and merchandise are sold inside. Outside food is not permitted, but unopened water bottles are typically allowed.
Covered seating goes fast. Shaded seating is limited. Arrive early to claim a covered table or bring a pop-up sun umbrella for your chair.
Locker rentals are worth it. There's no good way to secure valuables without a locker. Day lockers are available near the entrance.
The last 2 hours are the best. As the afternoon crowd thins before closing, lines for the main slides drop significantly. If you arrive at noon, plan to stay until close.
For Families with Very Young Children
Children under 3 (or under a certain height) may not be able to ride most attractions. For toddler-focused visits, the Lil' Waves area is the main draw. Some families with very young children find that a half-day at H2OBX plus an afternoon at the beach is a better plan than a full day at the park.
Getting There from Grandy Cove
H2OBX is approximately 5 minutes from Grandy Cove on US-158 heading south — one of the park's primary advantages for guests staying at the property. Parking at H2OBX is free and ample.
After a full day at the park, returning to the waterfront deck for a sunset dinner at Grandy Cove is a solid plan.
