Between the cold quiet of winter and the crowded heat of summer lies what might be the best two months on the Outer Banks: April and May. The water is warming, the crowds are absent, the wildlife is exploding with activity, and the prices are the lowest they'll be until October.
Spring is when OBX regulars quietly rebook.
The Weather
April: Average highs in the mid-60s to low 70s. Some cold fronts still blow through in early April, but by mid-to-late April the weather is consistently pleasant. Ocean water temperatures are in the upper 50s–low 60s — too cold for most swimmers, but fine for kayakers in wetsuits.
May: The transition month. Early May can feel like late spring; late May starts to feel like summer. Average highs reach the mid-70s, and by Memorial Day weekend the beaches are summer-ready. Ocean water approaches 68–72°F — comfortable for swimming.
The main spring weather variable is wind. April and May can bring sustained southwest and northeast winds that affect outdoor activities. Flexible itinerary planning works better than a rigid schedule.
Why Go in Spring
No Crowds
From April 1 through mid-May, the OBX operates like a locals-only destination. Parking at beaches is effortless, restaurants don't require reservations, and you can walk stretches of Nags Head or Corolla beach with no one in sight. This is the OBX many regular visitors describe as "real."
Lower Rates
Spring rates at most OBX rentals are significantly lower than summer. At Grandy Cove, spring rates are among the lowest of the year — the same waterfront property and dock access at prices well below peak season.
Wildlife and Nature
Spring migration turns the OBX into a birding spectacle. The barrier islands sit along the Atlantic Flyway, and April–May is peak migration season. Migrating songbirds pile up in the maritime forests, shorebirds work the beaches, and osprey return to their nesting platforms after wintering south.
The wild horses of Corolla are active and visible in spring, and the marsh and sound ecosystems are coming alive after winter. Kayaking Currituck Sound in April — with returning ospreys and nesting herons overhead — is one of the finest nature experiences on the OBX.
Spring Fishing
Fishing picks up dramatically in spring as water temperatures rise:
- Red drum — Spring runs of channel bass in Currituck Sound and the surf begin in April; some of the best trophy drum fishing of the year
- Striped bass — Still active in the sound in April before they move north
- Bluefish — Return to OBX nearshore waters in April and May
- Flounder — Gigging and rod-and-reel flounder fishing in the sound improves through May
- Spanish mackerel — First appearances from the pier and nearshore boat in May
See our complete fishing guide for specific locations and methods.
What's Open in Spring
Most major attractions reopen for spring season:
April:
- Wright Brothers National Memorial — Open year-round
- Jockey's Ridge State Park — Open year-round
- NC Aquarium at Roanoke Island — Open year-round
- Bodie Island Lighthouse tower climbing — Opens mid-April
- Currituck Beach Lighthouse climbing — Opens mid-April
- Wild horse tours (Corolla) — Reduced schedule early April; full schedule by late April
May:
- All of the above plus growing restaurant availability in beach towns
- Most vacation rental properties transition from off-season to full operation
- Kitty Hawk Kites kiteboarding and hang gliding programs launch
- H2OBX Water Park — Opens late May for Memorial Day weekend
Dog Rules in Spring
Spring is an excellent time for dog-friendly OBX travel. The seasonal beach restrictions that apply June–September (dogs prohibited on most beaches from 10am–5pm) have not yet taken effect:
- Before Memorial Day: Dogs are typically allowed on most OBX beaches at any hour with a leash
- After Memorial Day: Summer restrictions begin at many beaches
Check individual beach policies, as rules vary by municipality. Corolla beaches allow dogs year-round with a leash.
Spring Events
- Outer Banks Seafood Festival (October, but the spring equivalent events begin in late May)
- Hang Gliding Spectacular (spring editions at Jockey's Ridge)
- Various OBX surf competitions begin in May
Book a Spring Stay
Grandy Cove is open year-round and spring rates are among the lowest of the year. The combination of shoulder-season pricing, no crowds, great fishing, and peak wildlife makes April and May some of the most compelling months to visit.
