OBX Vet Guide: Veterinary Care for Pets on the Outer Banks

Traveling with a pet to the Outer Banks is a genuinely good experience — the area is pet-friendly, the beaches are accessible, and the rental options are strong. But part of responsible pet travel is knowing where to go if something goes wrong. A cut paw, an ear infection from swimming, or an allergic reaction to a bee sting can happen on any trip; knowing your options before they're urgent makes all the difference.

Here's our guide to veterinary care for OBX visitors.

Emergency Veterinary Care

Outer Banks Veterinary Center (Southern Shores)

The primary veterinary clinic serving the northern and central OBX. They offer emergency appointments during business hours and are the recommended first call for urgent care during the day.

Location: Southern Shores, NC (between Duck and Kitty Hawk)
Phone: (252) 261-3960
Hours: Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–1pm
Distance from Grandy Cove: ~25 minutes

Animal Medical Hospital of Dare County (Kill Devil Hills)

A full-service veterinary hospital with a larger staff and after-hours emergency service options during peak season.

Location: Kill Devil Hills, NC
Phone: (252) 441-6555
Hours: Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, with after-hours emergency line during peak summer
Distance from Grandy Cove: ~25–30 minutes

For After-Hours Emergencies

If an emergency occurs outside business hours, the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary facility is:

Care First Animal Hospital (Raleigh/Cary area) — 2–2.5 hours west of the OBX, but available 24/7
VCA Regional Emergency Animal Care Hospital (Virginia Beach, VA) — ~1.5 hours north

Having these numbers saved before your trip is worthwhile insurance.

Routine and Walk-In Care

Both clinics listed above accept walk-in appointments for non-emergency needs (minor wound care, ear infections, GI upset, medication refills). Call ahead to check availability, especially in the summer when demand spikes with visiting pet owners.

For prescription refills, most pharmacies near the OBX can fill pet prescriptions — CVS in Grandy and Kitty Hawk, Walmart in Grandy.

Common Health Issues for OBX Pets

Ear infections — The most common issue for swimming dogs. Salt water and brackish sound water introduce bacteria and yeast. Dry ears thoroughly after every swim with a soft cloth; consider a veterinary ear-drying solution if your dog is prone to infections.

Paw burns — OBX sand in July and August can reach 120°F+ surface temperature. Burns on the pads are painful and slow to heal. Walk early in the morning, check the sand temperature before walks, and consider dog booties for midday outings.

Saltwater ingestion — Dogs playing in the ocean often ingest water. Small amounts cause mild GI upset; large amounts cause serious electrolyte imbalances. Always have fresh water available and limit ocean play time, especially in excited dogs who lap up water.

Bee and jellyfish stings — Both are common. A bee sting causing localized swelling is manageable with Benadryl (dose: 1mg/lb, maximum 50mg); facial swelling or difficulty breathing requires emergency vet care. Portuguese man-o'-war stings (occasional on OBX beaches) are more serious; consult a vet.

Ticks — Currituck County has a significant tick population, especially in wooded and marsh-edge areas. Check your dog daily; use a tick remover tool if you find an attached tick. Lyme disease is present in the region.

Heatstroke — A real risk in summer. Early signs: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy. Move to shade immediately, apply cool (not cold) water to paws, ears, and belly. Get to a vet quickly if symptoms persist.

Before You Leave Home

The best preparation for pet health on a trip is prevention:

  • Current flea, tick, and heartworm prevention — Verify treatments are current before departure
  • Vaccination records — Carry a paper copy; most rentals (including Grandy Cove) require proof of rabies vaccination
  • Pet insurance — If you have it, photograph your policy card. If you don't, consider a short-term travel policy for the trip
  • Medication supply — Bring any regular medications plus a 5-day emergency supply in case travel extends unexpectedly
  • Vet contact — Have your home vet's number saved; they can often advise by phone for minor issues

Grandy Cove's Pet Amenities

Grandy Cove is equipped to make pet care straightforward during your stay. Dog crates, food and water bowls, waste bags, and waterproof flooring throughout mean the property works with pet owners rather than against them. The laundry room handles post-beach towels and bedding.

Up to 2 dogs welcome; no size restrictions; no breed restrictions.
