Kitty Hawk Beach
About 25 minutes from Grandy Cove, Kitty Hawk Beach is one of the most accessible and beloved stretches of OBX sand. The waves are generally gentle, making it ideal for families with young children and beginner swimmers. The beach town has a laid-back vibe with great restaurants and shops within walking distance.
Best for: Families, beginners, easy parking
Kill Devil Hills
Where the Wright Brothers made history is also where some of the best beach days happen. Kill Devil Hills sits just south of Kitty Hawk and offers slightly more action in the water — great for bodyboarders and intermediate swimmers.
Best for: Active beach-goers, bodyboarding, sunbathing
Nags Head
Nags Head is the classic OBX experience. Wide sandy beaches, classic beach cottages, and the iconic Jockey's Ridge sand dunes just a short walk away. The Nags Head Fishing Pier is one of the longest on the East Coast and worth a visit even if you're not fishing.
Best for: The full OBX experience, families, fishing
Corolla and Carova — Wild Horse Country
Head north of Duck and you'll reach the truly wild end of the Outer Banks. Corolla and the 4WD-accessible Carova beaches are where you might spot the famous Colonial Spanish Mustangs roaming free in the sand dunes. Dogs are allowed on the beach here at any hour, year-round, as long as they're on a leash.
Best for: Pet owners, wild horse watching, solitude
Beach Tips for Grandy Cove Guests
- Dog rules: Every OBX town allows dogs on the beach, but the summer rules differ. Southern Shores (May 15–September 15) and Kill Devil Hills (Memorial Day–Labor Day) keep dogs off the sand from 9am to 6pm. Kitty Hawk allows dogs all day but requires a leash of 6 feet or less from 10am to 6pm in summer. Nags Head and Corolla allow leashed dogs at any hour. - Parking: Arrive early in summer — prime beach parking fills up fast by 9am. Many guests find it worth driving the extra few minutes to less crowded spots.
- Amenities: The main beach towns have full bathroom facilities, rinse stations, and gear rentals. Corolla and Carova are remote — bring everything you need.
- Sun: The OBX sun is intense. SPF 50+, hats, and rash guards are strongly recommended, especially for kids.
