Three Things a Stilted Beach House Cannot Offer

Elevator to the door
Parking level to the front door, no stairs.
Almost every Outer Banks rental is a beach house on pilings with a flight of stairs before you reach the living room. Here, the building's elevator runs from the parking level to the covered deck outside the front door, and the entry is a keypad, so there is no desk to visit and no key to collect.

One level inside, wide doorways
Living room, kitchen, bedrooms, and baths on a single floor.
The condo is a single-level, open-plan layout with wide doorways and hard flooring throughout, so a wheelchair or walker moves between rooms without a threshold to negotiate. The main bathroom has a walk-in shower with a glass door and a double vanity; the second bathroom has a tub.

Dock at ground level
The water is the easy part of the trip.
The private dock and boardwalk sit at ground level on Currituck Sound, which is calm, flat water with no surf and no sand to cross. Birdwatching, drop-line crabbing, and sound fishing all happen from a seated position on the dock, a few steps from the elevator.

Accessible Days Out From Grandy
The sound side of the Outer Banks is flatter, quieter, and easier to park at than the oceanfront. The ocean beach is a 20 to 25 minute drive and needs a beach wheelchair, which OBX Beach Mobility in Kitty Hawk rents by the week.
Our full accessible OBX guide covers beach wheelchair delivery days, which restaurants have step-free entrances, and where the accessible beach mats are.
Wheelchair-accessible OBX guide- Wright Brothers National Memorial20 to 25 min
Paved, flat, and fully accessible: visitor center, replica hangars, and flight markers are all on level ground.
Elevators between levels, smooth floors, and wide corridors. A good indoor day in heat or rain.
- Duck Village boardwalk25 to 35 min
Flat, wide, and paved along Currituck Sound, lined with restaurants and shops.
- Jockey's Ridge State Park25 to 30 min
A boardwalk to an elevated viewing platform, plus a limited-availability all-terrain wheelchair by reservation.
What People Ask Before Booking an Accessible OBX Stay
- Is Grandy Cove ADA compliant?
- We have not had the condo certified against the ADA standard, and we would rather describe it precisely than use a label. It has an elevator from parking to the front door, a single-level layout with wide doorways and hard floors, and a walk-in shower with a glass door. Send us your specific requirements through the form on this page and we will measure and photograph whatever you need before you book.
- How do I get from the car to the front door?
- Park at the building, take the elevator up to the third-floor covered deck, and the front door of unit 304 is a short roll along the deck. The lock is a keypad, so you go straight in.
- Are there any stairs inside the condo?
- No. The living room, kitchen, dining area, all three bedrooms, and both bathrooms are on one level.
- Is the shower a roll-in shower?
- It is a walk-in shower with a glass door in the main bathroom; we have not fitted it as a curbless roll-in shower. If you need a shower seat, grab bars, or the curb height, ask us and we will confirm what is there and what we can add before your stay.
- Can I get to the water?
- Yes. The boardwalk and private dock are at ground level on Currituck Sound, a short distance from the elevator. The sound is calm and flat, so sitting on the dock, fishing, and crabbing all work from a chair.
- What about the ocean beach?
- The nearest ocean beach accesses are a 20 to 25 minute drive, and standard wheelchairs do not work on sand. Beach wheelchairs and beach rollators can be rented for the week from OBX Beach Mobility in Kitty Hawk, with delivery to Kitty Hawk addresses or pickup. Our accessible OBX guide has the details, and we can help coordinate.
- Are service animals allowed?
- Always, regardless of the pet policy, and there is never a pet fee here anyway. The condo also welcomes up to two pet dogs of any size.
