Traveling with your dog to the Outer Banks is one of the great joys of an OBX vacation. The region is generally very dog-friendly — far more so than many other coastal destinations. Here's everything you need to know.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
OBX beach rules vary by town and season:
- Any hour, year-round: Corolla, Carova, Nags Head, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore allow leashed dogs on the beach all day in every season.
- Summer daytime bans: Southern Shores (May 15–Sept 15) and Kill Devil Hills (Memorial Day–Labor Day) keep dogs off the beach from 9am to 6pm. Kitty Hawk allows dogs all day but requires a leash of 6 feet or less from 10am to 6pm in summer.
- Off-season (mid-September to mid-May): Every town's beach is open to dogs all day. Most require a leash; Duck allows dogs off-leash on the beach under their owner's control, and Kitty Hawk does too outside its summer daytime window.
Our recommendation: Go early. A 7am beach walk with your dog, watching the sunrise over the Atlantic, is one of the most magical experiences the OBX offers.
Wild Horse Tours
Several tour operators in Corolla run 2-hour beach tours in large 4WD vehicles to see the famous Colonial Spanish Mustangs that roam freely in the dunes. Trails and Parks
- Currituck National Wildlife Refuge — Miles of hiking trails through maritime forest and wetlands. Dogs on leash are welcome. About 35 minutes from Grandy Cove.
- Jockey's Ridge State Park — The largest natural sand dune on the East Coast. Dogs on leash are allowed. The climb to the top (about 100 feet) is worth it for the views. 22 minutes away.
- Kitty Hawk Woods — A rare maritime forest, perfect for shaded trail walks. Dogs welcome on leash.
