The Complete Pet-Friendly Guide to the Outer Banks

Back to Blog

Traveling with your dog to the Outer Banks is one of the great joys of an OBX vacation. Grandy Cove is one of the most genuinely pet-friendly rentals on the OBX — up to 2 dogs with no size limits, dog bowls on-site, and easy waterfront access. The region is generally very dog-friendly — far more so than many other coastal destinations. Here's everything you need to know.

Dog-Friendly Beaches

OBX beach rules vary by town and season:

  • Year-round: Dogs are welcome at most northern OBX beaches (Corolla, Carova) and on the national seashore sections any time of year.
  • Seasonal restrictions (May 15–Sept 15): Dogs allowed before 10am and after 5pm on most beach town stretches (Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head). Leashes required at all times on the beach.
  • Off-season (Oct–May): Most beaches are open to dogs all day with a leash.

Our recommendation: Go early. A 7am beach walk with your dog, watching the sunrise over the Atlantic, is one of the most magical experiences the OBX offers.

Wild Horse Tours

Several tour operators in Corolla run 2-hour beach tours in large 4WD vehicles to see the famous Colonial Spanish Mustangs that roam freely in the dunes. Many of these tours allow well-behaved dogs in the vehicles — call ahead to confirm.

Our pick: Tour operators along Ocean Trail in Corolla. Book in advance during summer — these sell out quickly.

Trails and Parks

  • Currituck National Wildlife Refuge — Miles of hiking trails through maritime forest and wetlands. Dogs on leash are welcome. About 35 minutes from Grandy Cove.
  • Jockey's Ridge State Park — The largest natural sand dune on the East Coast. Dogs on leash are allowed. The climb to the top (about 100 feet) is worth it for the views. 22 minutes away.
  • Kitty Hawk Woods — A rare maritime forest, perfect for shaded trail walks. Dogs welcome on leash.

Dog-Friendly Dining

Many OBX restaurants have outdoor seating that welcomes well-behaved dogs. Look for spots in Duck, Corolla, and Nags Head with covered patios. Always call ahead to confirm, as policies can change.

Staying at Grandy Cove with Your Dog

When you book Grandy Cove, here's what to expect for your pup:

  • Dog bowls and mats are already at the property — you don't need to bring them
  • Easy-clean LVP flooring throughout means muddy paws are no problem
  • The balcony is safely railed — great for supervised outdoor time
  • The laundry room is perfect for washing dog blankets and bedding
  • The building has elevator access — no stairs for older or large dogs
  • We're steps from green space for morning and evening walks

Up to 2 dogs are welcome with no size restrictions. Just let us know when you book! See everything we offer for pet owners on our pet-friendly rental page, explore what to do with your dog on the OBX, and check availability for your stay.
