Staying on the Currituck mainland means the ocean is a drive, not a walk. That trade is the whole point — you get the dock, the sunset, and the quiet side of the water. But it does raise one practical question, and it's the one guests ask us more than any other: where exactly do we park when we want to swim in the ocean?
The honest answer is 20 to 25 minutes east across the Wright Memorial Bridge to Kitty Hawk, or closer to 25 to 30 if you keep driving south into Kill Devil Hills. Anyone promising you a 15-minute beach from the mainland is measuring to the bridge, not to the sand.
What matters far more than the drive time is picking the right access. Some have a paved lot, a bathhouse with hot showers, and a lifeguard fifty feet away. Others are seven gravel spaces on a residential street with a port-o-potty and nothing else. Below is the breakdown, verified against the towns' own published access lists.
First, the one thing most visitors get wrong
Southern Shores and Duck are not options for you. They are the first two towns you hit after the bridge, and on a map they look like the obvious choice. But Southern Shores has no public beach access parking at all — its walkovers and lots are reserved for residents, renters staying in town, and their guests, with permits required. Duck's accesses are similarly restricted.
If you park in either town without a permit, you are risking a ticket, and you are taking a spot from someone who paid for it. Drive the extra five minutes to Kitty Hawk, where the public accesses are genuinely public.
Kitty Hawk: the closest real public beach from Grandy
Kitty Hawk is the first town with open public parking and it's the shortest drive from us. The town maintains roughly 266 public spaces spread across eleven access points, but they are not remotely equal.
Here's the thing worth knowing: almost every one of those street accesses is gravel parallel parking, with no restroom and no shower. Only three locations are paved — Byrd Street, Lillian Street, and the Bath House — and those three are where you want to be.
Kitty Hawk Bath House — the best all-around choice
3840 N. Virginia Dare Trail. This is the one to put in your phone.
- 50 paved parking spaces, two of them accessible
- Public restrooms with showers — actual plumbing, not a port-o-potty
- Fixed lifeguard stand in season
If you have kids, sand, and a car you'd rather not fill with both, this is the access. Rinsing off properly before the drive back over the bridge is worth the extra two minutes of driving to get here.
Byrd Street — the biggest lot
Just south of where Kitty Hawk Road meets NC 12, Byrd Street has the largest capacity on the list: 64 spaces with three accessible spots, split between the east and west sides of the road. There's a port-o-potty and a fixed lifeguard stand, but no shower.
Byrd is the fallback when the Bath House lot is full, and the volume of spaces means it usually has something well after the smaller accesses have filled.
Lillian Street — paved and quieter
35 paved spaces, three accessible, and a fixed lifeguard stand. No restroom. Lillian is a good middle option — paved parking and a guard without the Bath House crowd.
The rest of Kitty Hawk's accesses
Fonck (6 spaces), Maynard (16), Bennett (7), Luke (13), Bleriot (26), Wilkins (9), Hawks (11), and Balchen (21) are all gravel street parking. Luke and Bleriot have port-o-potties and fixed lifeguard stands; the others have neither. These work fine for a short swim or an evening walk, but they aren't where you want to base a full day with a cooler and small children.
Kitty Hawk lifeguards and beach wheelchairs
Kitty Hawk Ocean Rescue staffs the fixed stands 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day, then 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Labor Day through September 30. Roving guards patrol the rest of the beach on ATVs.
Free beach wheelchairs are available first-come, first-served and must be returned by 4 p.m. each day. Call the Kitty Hawk Fire Department at (252) 261-2666 to check availability.
Kill Devil Hills: more accesses, better facilities
Five more minutes south gets you to Kill Devil Hills, which has close to thirty public accesses and — importantly — outdoor showers at most of them. If a rinse-off matters to you and the Kitty Hawk Bath House lot is full, KDH is the better bet.
Ocean Bay Boulevard — the fully accessible one
At Milepost 8, Ocean Bay Boulevard is Kill Devil Hills' flagship access and the most accessible beach entry on the northern Outer Banks:
- Paved lot (about 29 spaces)
- Bathhouse with restrooms and outdoor showers
- Lifeguard stand
- A wooden ramp plus fixed and roll-out mats running over the sand — meaning a wheelchair, a walker, or a stroller can actually reach firm ground near the water instead of stopping at the dune line

The catch is size. Twenty-nine spaces go fast — in peak summer, plan on arriving before 10 a.m. or you'll be circling.
Eighth Street — the Mobi-Mat access
Eighth Street has paved parking with accessible spaces, an outdoor shower, a lifeguard stand, an accessible beach overlook, and one of the two Mobi-Mats on the Outer Banks. It's the northern end of Kill Devil Hills, which makes it the quickest KDH access from the bridge.
Accesses with restrooms
Most Kill Devil Hills accesses give you a shower but not a bathroom. The ones that have some form of restroom:
- Ocean Bay Boulevard — full bathhouse
- Prospect Avenue — bathroom facility, paved parking, shower, accessible overlook (no lifeguard)
- Ferris, Raleigh, Hayman, Clark, Martin, and Atlantic — porta-johns, paved parking, showers
Accesses with paved parking, showers, and a lifeguard
If your priorities are simply "park on pavement, rinse off, swim near a guard," these all qualify: Third Street, Second Street, First Street, Asheville Drive, Woodmere Avenue, Carlow Avenue, Oregon Avenue, Clark Street, Martin Street, Atlantic Street, Hayman Boulevard, and Eighth Street.
Two Kill Devil Hills rules to know
Overnight parking is prohibited at town beach accesses from midnight to 6 a.m. without a permit, and permits go only to residents and property owners. Leaving gear on the beach overnight is also prohibited — tents, chairs, and canopies left out get removed. And fill in any hole you dig before you leave; it's a genuine safety rule, not a suggestion. Nags Head, if you're already heading that way
Nags Head is 30-plus minutes from Grandy, so it's not the everyday choice — but if your day already includes Jockey's Ridge or a drive to Manteo, these are worth knowing:
- Jennette's Pier — bathhouse, accessible, and the second Mobi-Mat on the Outer Banks. The pier itself is a thousand feet of flat concrete over the ocean, which is its own form of accessible ocean access.
- Bonnett Street (Milepost 11.5) — bathhouse, lifeguard, accessible, beach mat. Staffed through September 30, 2026, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Hargrove — bathhouse, accessible, beach mat.
Nags Head staffs all its stands from mid-June through mid-August; the Gulfstream, Bonnett, Juncos, and Epstein stands stay guarded through September 30, 2026, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free beach wheelchairs are available year-round from Fire Station 16 — reserve by calling (252) 441-5909.
Planning around accessibility
If mobility is a factor in your trip, three things are worth writing down:
- Ocean Bay Boulevard in Kill Devil Hills is the single best beach entry in the area — ramp, mats, bathhouse, and a lifeguard in one place.
- Every town here loans beach wheelchairs free of charge, but availability is first-come and hours vary. Call ahead the day before rather than the morning of.
- Dare County publishes an interactive GIS map of accessible parks, fishing spots, and trails at play.darecountync.gov, with filters you can set to your needs.

A practical routine that saves the day
Guests who do this well tend to follow the same rhythm:
- Leave Grandy by 9 a.m. in summer. Lots fill between 10 and 11, and the Wright Memorial Bridge gets heavy on Saturday and Sunday changeover mornings — see the OBX traffic guide for timing.
- Pick a first choice and a backup. Bath House, then Byrd. Ocean Bay, then Eighth Street.
- Pack for no facilities. Even at the good accesses, a jug of water in the trunk beats waiting in a shower line.
- Come back for the sound. Ocean in the morning, dock in the afternoon. Currituck Sound is calm, shallow, and warm — the better water for young kids and for dogs, which is much of why the soundfront trade works.

Skip entirely: Southern Shores and Duck, unless you're staying there.
