The Outer Banks in December 2026: Events, Dates, and a Quiet-Season Plan

December on the Outer Banks is two things at once. It's the emptiest the beaches get all year, with room for a long dog walk at the tide line and nobody else in sight. It's also a month with a surprisingly full local calendar: a botanical garden lit with more than a million lights, a dozen bars that turn into Christmas pop-ups, a walking tour of decorated homes in Manteo, and, on December 17, the anniversary of the first powered flight.

This is a 2026 calendar. Dates below were checked against each organizer in early October. Where an organizer hasn't posted 2026 details yet, we say so, so you don't build a day around a guess.

For the evergreen side of a holiday trip (Christmas dinner, what closes, what to pack), see our Christmas on the Outer Banks guide. This post is the month at a glance.

Before December: Two Dates at the End of November

If your trip starts Thanksgiving week, two things fall just before the month turns.

Kites with Lights is on Saturday, November 28, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jockey's Ridge State Park. Kitty Hawk Kites flies big kites rigged with holiday lights over the dunes at dusk, the park lights its solar Christmas tree on the dunes around 5 p.m., and admission is free. Leashed dogs are welcome, as they are anywhere on state park property. Our Jockey's Ridge guide covers parking and the walk up.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse closes for climbing after November 30. The 2026 season runs March 21 through November 30, daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. If climbing the red-brick tower in Corolla is on your list, do it before December. The lighthouse doesn't reopen until spring. The rest of the lighthouses are in our OBX lighthouse guide.

WinterLights at the Elizabethan Gardens

This is the big one. The Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo string more than a million lights through ten acres of gardens and open them on select evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

The 2026 nights in December are:

  • December 2–5
  • December 9–12
  • December 16–19
  • December 21–23
  • December 26–29

(It also opens November 20–21, 25, and 27–28.) The gardens are closed in the daytime during the run, starting November 19.

What's useful to know:

  • Dogs are allowed, with their own ticket. Leashed dogs get a low-cost ticket of their own, children under 2 are free, and youth tickets cost less than adult ones. Current prices are on the gardens' site. Buy online in advance. You can buy at the door, but busy nights fill up.
  • Santa is there from 6 to 8 p.m. every WinterLights night.
  • It's weather-dependent. Tickets are non-refundable unless the gardens cancel, so look at the forecast before you buy.
  • Friday and Saturday parking overflows. On select weekend nights a shuttle runs from overflow parking at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site next door.

The gardens are at 1411 National Park Drive in Manteo, about 50 minutes from Grandy. A weeknight in the first half of December is the calmest time to go.

The 12 Bars of Christmas

Since 2023, twelve bars and restaurants between Kitty Hawk and Manteo have turned themselves into Christmas pop-ups for the season. Each one gets a holiday name, decorations, and a themed menu. Most of them are in Kill Devil Hills, with the rest in Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Manteo. Along the way they host holiday markets, gingerbread contests, and brunches.

The passport is the reason to go to more than one. It's optional and inexpensive, and every dollar goes to local nonprofits: last season's twelve included the Beach Food Pantry, OBX Room in the Inn, and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation. You collect a stamp at each bar, no purchase required. A full passport earns a keepsake ornament and an entry in a charity raffle.

Last season ran from November 27 to January 3. The organizers hadn't posted the 2026 lineup and dates when we checked, so confirm at 12barsofchristmas.com before you plan a route. The participating bars can change from year to year.

A practical point: these are bars spread across about 25 miles of road. Pick a cluster in Kill Devil Hills or Manteo, and settle who's driving before you start.

Manteo's Holiday Tour of Homes: Saturday, December 5

The Manteo Preservation Trust's Holiday Tour of Homes is held on the first Saturday in December, which is December 5 in 2026. It's the Trust's main fundraiser. Historic homes and other buildings on Roanoke Island are decorated and opened to ticket holders, and you walk between them through the old downtown.

It's ticketed, and in past years the tour started on Budleigh Street. Check the Trust's 2026 announcement for times, prices, and where to buy tickets. The route is walkable, and it pairs well with an early dinner on the waterfront and a WinterLights ticket that evening, since the gardens are open December 5. Our Manteo day trip guide covers where to eat.

Duck Yuletide Celebration

Duck holds its tree lighting and Yuletide Celebration at Duck Town Park on an early-December Saturday afternoon. Last year's was December 6, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m., with live holiday music, treats, the tree lighting, and Santa's arrival, plus donations collected for the Outer Banks SPCA and the Beach Food Pantry. The Town of Duck hadn't posted the 2026 date when we checked. Watch ducknc.gov, and expect a Saturday in early December.

It's a small-town event, and that's its charm. Walk the soundside boardwalk before it starts and you'll be there for the early sunset. More in our Duck guide.

December 17: The First Flight Anniversary in America's 250th Year

At 10:35 a.m. on December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made the first powered flight at Kill Devil Hills. Every year on that date, the National Park Service and the First Flight Society hold a commemoration at Wright Brothers National Memorial. In 2026 it's on a Thursday, it's the 123rd anniversary, and it's the last big event of Dare County's year-long America 250 program.

Park entry is free on December 17. Past ceremonies have included a wreath laying at the first-flight boulder, guest speakers, and a flyover. An off-site luncheon is usually sold separately, in advance. When we checked, the NPS hadn't published the full 2026 schedule. Look at nps.gov/wrbr in early December, and arrive early, because parking on the day is limited.

For the history behind it and the rest of the 2026 programming, see our America 250 on the Outer Banks guide. For a normal visit (the visitor center, the Flyer reproduction, the climb up Big Kill Devil Hill), see the Wright Brothers Memorial guide. The memorial is about 30 minutes from Grandy.

New Year's Eve on the Manteo Waterfront

The Town of Manteo closes downtown streets on December 31 for its New Year's Eve street fair, long known locally as Midnight Magic. Recent years brought live music, games, bonfires, and food trucks along the waterfront, plus fireworks and an early ball drop for kids, so families can celebrate and still be home at a reasonable hour. Then it carries on until midnight.

Check the Town of Manteo's 2026 listing for start times. If you're staying through the holiday, our New Year's on the Outer Banks guide covers the rest of the options.

The Quiet Half of the Month

The calendar above fills maybe four evenings. The rest of December on the OBX is the off-season. Plan for that and it becomes the best part of the trip.

  • The beaches are nearly empty, and dogs are allowed. Every northern OBX town allows dogs on the beach in December. Kitty Hawk and Nags Head have no seasonal ban at all, and Kill Devil Hills' and Southern Shores' daytime summer bans have long since ended. Leash rules still apply year-round, and lengths vary by town (6 feet on Cape Hatteras National Seashore, 10 feet in Nags Head and Southern Shores). The town-by-town rules are in our dog beaches guide.
  • Days are short. Sunset comes just before 5 p.m. for most of the month. Get outside in the morning and save the evenings for lights and dinner.
  • Hours shrink. Plenty of restaurants and shops cut back to weekends or close until spring. Call ahead, especially from December 24 to 26. Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year.
  • Pack for wind. Daytime highs are usually in the 40s and 50s, and the breeze off the water makes it feel colder. A windproof shell matters more than a heavy coat.

Our Outer Banks in winter guide has more on what stays open and how to spend the off-season. If you came earlier in the fall, the Outer Banks in fall guide covers that season.

Where to Stay for a December Trip

Most of the events above are on Roanoke Island or the central beach strip. A base on the mainland side of the sound keeps you within reach of all of it without staying in the middle of it. From Grandy, Kitty Hawk is about 25 minutes, the Wright Brothers Memorial and the Kill Devil Hills bars are about 30, Jockey's Ridge about 40, and Manteo and the Elizabethan Gardens about 50.

Grandy Cove is open all winter. It's a three-bedroom condo on the sound with a private dock, sleeps six, and has a full kitchen. That matters in a month when restaurants close on the holidays and an oyster roast at home beats fighting for a reservation. Up to two dogs of any size are welcome, with no pet fee. Our pet policy has the details.

Plan Your December 2026 Trip

Holiday weeks on the water, especially pet-friendly ones, book before the rest of the off-season does. If a WinterLights night, the December 17 ceremony, or a quiet week between Christmas and New Year's is on your list, pick the dates now.

Check December availability and book direct, with no platform fees.
